Local Spins of the Week: Drew Nelson’s tribute to the Eagle Rock protest
By John Sinkevics | The Grand Rapids Press
And finally, here’s yet another “Sound Check” gem/exclusive. Singer-songwriter Drew Nelson has written and recorded a poignant song, “Eagle Rock (Song for the People),” in tribute to the Native Americans in the Upper Peninsula who are protesting and attempting to stop a nickel and copper mine at Eagle Rock outside Big Bay, Michigan. Indian tribes have used the sacred Eagle Rock for spiritual ceremonies, but Kennecott Eagle Minerals Co. plans to run the mine’s entrance tunnel beneath the 60-foot-high rock. The song is literally hot off the presses, having been recorded Wednesday night at friend and fellow singer-songwriter Brant Satala’s apartment in Grand Rapids. Nelson said he penned the tune for those gallant people “standing off one of the largest mining companies in the world. If we can do anything to bring attention to this, I will do it … even if I have to play the Billy Bragg role” (referring to an activist who frequently brought political themes into his music).
More info about those supporting the Eagle Rock protest is available online at savethewildup.org, standfortheland.com and yellowdogwatershed.org.
