Mining expert Jack Parker explains how he came to be a key opponent of Rio Tinto’s Eagle Mine Project, and why he has continued fighting for revocation of their permits.
Parker was initially hired by the National Wildlife Federation in 2006 to evaluate Kennecott’s application to mine. After a year and a quarter, the money ran out. He has continued working for free.
“We were astounded by the number of errors in it…we recommended that the document be returned to sender, collect, because it was so bad.”
“The situation was obviously crooked. Data had been fudged in such a way that the passage, the acceptance of the application and the providing of the permit was guaranteed.”

Mr. Parker is asking that people contact Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette to demand an investigation.
Parker pointed out in a July 3 press release that, “MDEQ ignored the conclusions and recommendations of their own expert and those of other experts, and accepted the application. They went on to issue all permits demanded by Kennecott, regardless of protests by public and by experts. Kennecott has been conducting construction activities ever since, illegally but with the consent of MDEQ.
