EPA delegated much of its authority to the State of Michigan, and the DEQ has rubber-stamped pretty much everything Kennecott asks for and looks the other way when they twist and break the rules.

Eagle Rock was under consideration as a sacred site, but that fell through when EPA decided K-cott's revised TWIS (Treated Water Infiltration System) no longer required an underground injection permit. Why not? Because the new design had styrofoam wrapped pipes instead of having them covered with a layer of soil. Not "underground"!
Then, DEQ determined, against the judge's recommendations, that Eagle Rock is not a sacred site because there's no structure there!!

Otherwise, the judges have sided with Kennecott, taking their word over that of numerous experts in mining, hydrology and other relevant fields.

The approval of projects (deals) like the Delich Land Exchange Project by the Ottawa National Forest leadership does nothing more than speed up the sprint that this Nation has underway to its utter destruction. Forget the impacts of global warming - we are literally ripping the Earth apart in an unprecedented and unsustainable mindless manner. The USFS obviously needs to be told that actions like this to facilitate the demise of our natural resources and natural beauty is disgustingly stupid.

For the record - this project is just plain stupid. I have to ask the approving official(s) - when do you stop being a hand maiden for corporate greed and start being a father, mother, grandfather, grandmother or just a steward of conservation? Moreover, the USFS has completely ignored its policy regarding consultation with Federally recognized Indian Tribes, the obligation to protect tribal treaty trust resources, and the requirement to take into account the traditional cultural properties located within the land you are proposing to "exchange".

Furthermore, there is absolutely no aspect of this project that justifies a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) under the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) or you will certainly be subjected to litigation, and the court will remand the action to the agency with instructions to "follow the law" resulting in yet another waste of tax dollars. It's just that simple.

Than you for the opportunity to comment.

This is beautifully written. Mother Earth is our life source - all of ours, everyone on this earth. She needs and deserves our respect. I send my love and energy to her each evening. I do not except what is happening with the Eagle mine or this road, I do not accept Rio Tintos presence here and I envision the area free of them and their destruction. I respect the Anishinaabeg although I am not a member of their nation and I stand behind them totally.

Q1: When a 60ft road is built on a two-track or on a snowmobile trail how are you going to fit it in the old ROW - with its straightenings and its sweeping curves and its gentler gradients and its wide embankments. Not possible is it?

Q2. What if you cannot meet Adam's deadlines? Who pays?

Q3. It looks as if the taxpayers may have to foot some big bills. Why don't we ask all of the proponents and all of the county residents how much they will contribute toward the cost of Kennecott's haul road. If somebody does not respond we can assume that he will contribute nothing, then he is not supporting the venture.

Q4. We all realize, don't we, that when our non-renewable resources are shipped out - we are impoverished, same as Third-World countries. Can we make this a toll road, like the big bridge? Pay by the ton, or by the axle?

Thank you Carla !
